A leaking shower not only causes the constant dripping noise and the wastage of water, but also leads to high utility bills. Though it might seem like a smaller problem, it could lead to mould and structural problems in the long term. There are several causes for the showerhead to leak:

  • Build-up of dirt, grime or lime scale
  • Damaged inner seals
  • Damaged washers
  • Damaged O-rings
  • Loose fittings

how to fix a leaking showerhead

Here are the steps to fix a leaking shower:

  1. Turn off the water supply and unscrew the showerhead by turning the head counterclockwise. If you can’t find the shut-off valve, you can turn off the main water supply.
  2. Check for any mineral or dirt accumulations. Soak the shower head in vinegar for about 8 hours to soften the mineral and dirt deposits. Clean the shower head with a brush or a pin to remove the buildup. Rinse the shower head.
  3. Remove the shower handle and check if the O-ring or the washer is worn out. It is recommended to replace all the rubber washers at once. The washer kit is different for different types of faucets.
  4. If the shower is still leaking, it’s time to check the diverter valve. Depending on the temperature of the leaking water, the leaking diverter valve can be detected. Unscrew the handle of the tap and check the washers and O-rings. Replace the washers if it is worn out.
  5. Turn on the water supply and check if the shower head is still leaking. If the shower is still leaking, it’s time to contact a plumber to get some professional help.
