Water is the precious resource from the nature that is becoming scarce. One of the major sources of the water waste is from the shower. Experts say that up to 50 litres of water per person per day can saved if used minimally. Here are a few tips on saving water in the shower:
Use an efficient showerhead
The standard shower head uses about 19 litres/minute and thus a 5 minute shower everyday uses 36,000 litres of water a year approximately. You can switch to an efficient water showerhead which uses 9 litres of water per minute. Additionally, shower heads come with a shutoff feature which reduces the water when you lather your hair or soap up.
Reduce the time in the shower
The time in the shower has an effect on the water usage. An ordinary shower uses about 12 litres of water per minute. If you reduce time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes, about 22,000 litres per year. Taking shorter showers will have an impact on water wastage.
Save the cold water
It’s common to let the water down the drain while it heats up. Instead, the cold water can be saved with a bucket and can be used for watering the garden and plants, hand washing, soaking/washing the vessels.
Turn off the water when not required
If you are applying soap, shampoo or shaving, it is better to turn off the shower to reduce water wastage.
Avoid bath
To fill a bath, about 50 to 150 litres are required. A larger amount of water can be saved by taking a shower instead of a bath.
Water conservation now is more important than ever. You can do your part with these small changes in the shower routine.
